That Mitchell & Webb Look’s “Good Samaritan”
or Stewart Lee & Richard Herring’s “Consider the Lilly?”
Last weekend our friend Shai visited from Oklahoma City.
No trip to Boulder County Colorado would be complete without a trip to our favorite mountain town Nederland .
Our first stop in Nederland was the Alpaca Store.
The man behind the counter was one of the most gentle hearted people I have ever met. It was like meeting a real life Bob Ross minus the fro. He lives on an Alpaca ranch and practically oozes inner peace. I spent too much money there but it was worth it. I bought a walking stick made out of aspen wood with a handle make of elk horn as well as the most comfortable pair of socks made out of Alpaca wool.
We then ventured to the Black Forest Restaurant where I had the most amazing sauerbraten ever!
Followed by some equally amazing Torte du jour.
Topped off with a spot of Black Tea
The staff at the Black Forest Restaurant were amazing. Our waiter reminded me of my recently deceased grampa who was also one of the most gentle hearted people I have ever known.
From there we reluctantly left Nederland and made our way down the Peak to Peak Highway towards Rocky Mountain National Park
where passed by the famous St Malo Chapel on the Rock
Shortly afterwards we ran into a beautiful valley with a stream running through it that was declared off limits by a “Private Proerty” sign. Shai & Cori sang the Five Man Electrical Band’s song Signs while I gave the Pierre-Joseph Proudhon salute.
We then ran into a happy little tree that somehow, against all odds was growing on a rock.
Eventually we made our way to Rocky Mountain National Park and visited the famous Alluvial Fan which was created in 1982 when the Lawn Lake busted through the terminal moraine that had held since the end of the last ice age releasing 29 million gallons of water and flooded the town of Estes Park.
From there we made our way up Trail Ridge Road to Rainbow Curve; the highest point of the road open this time of year.
Emboldened by a young child sliding sled-less down a snow covered hill I decided to climb up myself…..
…emerging triumphantly from my 50 meter ascent..
…and inspired from the small child who blazed the path before me, I slid down myself…
Shai followed my lead but unfortunately the pics of that are all on her camera in Oklahoma City (sad face)
We managed to convince Cori to climb up herself. After some positive encouragement from Shai & in spite of some Woody Hayes style yelling from me she mustered up the courage to make the plunge.
All in all it was a great day and we hope to do it again soon. Next time we’re making Shai come in the summer so we can go up Mount Evans – a REAL mountain road.
And last but not least, HAPPY MAY DAY EVERYONE!
And that’s because my computer went kaput. Mostly. And this is how I felt when I thought about trying to fix it for the 3rd time this year:
And Chris has been crazy busy, so you haven’t heard much from him, either. Everything is back up and running, now, though, so I can share some photos with you that I took on a walk last week.
About a mile from our home they cleared away an old trailer park, Shady Acres. The name was much prettier than the trailer park. I think they plan on turning it into senior housing, but right now it’s just an empty lot, that’s surprisingly peaceful and pretty. And maybe a little lonely.
I wouldn’t mind if they left it alone, or turned it into a park. It’s a fun place to explore.

Now that’s it’s cooling down we’ll be saying goodbye to one of our favorite places here in Colorado. Mount Evans Colorado
Arguably one of the scariest places in Colorado, too. Mount Evans boasts the highest paved road in America. I would bet that it’s one of the most narrow and winding roads, too! (Even if someone proved to me that it wasn’t, I would still swear it was.) That combination delivers as many eeks as it does oohs. Exhibit A:
Yes, that is a straight drop off the side. And beyond that? The most incredible view! (As taken from Chris’s phone.)
And once you reach the top you can spend some time with these guys. I was literally about 13 ft away from them, and they just laid there contentedly. The mountain goats at the top of Mount Evans have no natural predators, and therefore aren’t as fearful. There were also big horn sheep that were even closer to us than that. They were hanging out at a rest stop along the road, and people were feeding them, (which the park does not recommend.)
Look. I think Chris can touch the clouds from here!
The road closes seasonally, and this weekend is the last weekend to visit for the season. Hmmm…maybe a day trip is in our future this weekend.
It’s early fall football season. Check out this cool leather football helmet with a rubber facemask.
I don’t think it would help you much if you jumped in here, though.
Last but not least, don’t be fooled by this Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing from 13Chestnuts’ awesome Etsy shop!
If you could only have one, which would you choose?
This amazing modern fireplace,
or this ridiculously cool “vintage” mod computer created by Swedish art student Love Hulten?
We found a great Etsy store! Sweet Harvey LLC Their items are hand printed on a vintage Vandercook printing press while the fabric line is screen printed.
From their website:
All of our artwork is hand-drawn and then re-created digitally as vector artwork using Adobe Illustrator. Our letterpress work is individually hand printed on our antique Vandercook SP15 printing press which prints up to 13″ x 19″ poster size prints. Our fabric line is individually screen printed as well.
You know I can’t resist robots. But robots on tea towels?!
And a fox!
I fully support this sentiment! And what better image than a vintage Airstream trailer to accompany it?!
We are the lucky winners of a lovely Jan Skácelík print! Check out the contest here at mid-century-modern.net I can envision this perfectly in our office! Which one of his do you like the best?
I thought we would start a new thing. On Friday I will post some of my favorite finds. They will mostly be related to modern or vintage furniture and architecture.
But we may include anything. Let’s get started:
I would be remiss if I didn’t start out with an awesome Mod Cabin:
Next we have this amazing 50′s TV Stand:
And last but not least; a Fighting Pickle:
What are some of your favorites? I hope everybody is as glad as me that its Friday. Have a great weekend!
